The Scranton State School for the Deaf (SSSD) is the proud 127 year old home of the Bears, Pennsylvania's only state-owned and operated school for the deaf and a part of the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Our beautiful ten acre campus is nestled in the Green Ridge section of Scranton known for its elegant, stately homes, quiet streets and safe community. SSSD provides a comprehensive program for children who are Deaf and hard of hearing from birth through age 21. Small class size and a low student: teacher ratio allows each student maximum individual attention.
SSSD recognizes the importance of developing each student's ability to communicate. Students will, naturally, experience a communication-rich signing environment at SSSD. They will also have the opportunity to develop modes of communication in addition to American Sign Language (ASL) including: English, reading, writing, signing and speaking based on the annual program that is designed to meet their individual needs. As mandated in state law, for children ages 3 to 21, every student's program is based on his/her Individual Educational Plan (IEP). Or, for families with infants/toddlers, ages 0 to 3, on their Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP). From Monday through Thursday nights a family-style residential program is available for students who live too far to commute every day. Students who may have additional physical, emotional or learning challenges,or who live out of state are welcome to apply for admission to SSSD. All programs are provided without cost to families residing in Pennsylvania. Leadership development and healthy competition are enhanced through our student body government and sports programs.
