Mr. Joseph Antosh, Chief Engineer for the Elmhurst Fire Department and an SSSD employee presented a fire prevention and awareness program to Elementary students in recognition of Fire Prevention Week, October 9 - 15. Mr. Antosh volunteered for the assignment because he felt, in his words, "it would be good to see a friendly face presenting critical safety information." In his presentation Mr. Antosh discussed basic information on fire safety and explained the duties of a volunteer fireman. Mr. Antosh used a PowerPoint presentation to cover the rules of fire safety and to stimulate discussion of fire related topics. Various tools and fire fighting equipment were displayed and explained including fire hoses, nozzles and an air pack. Mr. Antosh also brought his firefighting clothing or "turn-out" gear and explained each piece of clothing and apparatus as he donned it.
Information was provided about strobe equipped fire alarms designed for use by deaf persons and the school evacuation drill was repeated and reinforced. Students were further encouraged to have their families develop and practice a home evacuation drill. Literature prepared by the National Fire Protection Agency was distributed to the students.
