Preschool classes at SSSD focus on the ongoing development of language concepts, communication skills, socialization, community awareness, pre-academic skills in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, English. The child's primary language is the modality through which these skills are addressed. Each child, three years of age and over, will have their program determined through the development of their IEP in conjunction with their family, and representatives of their local education agency or MAWA.
Based on their individual needs pre-school children may attend on a part-time or full-time basis. All support services and educational areas of the school area available to the pre-school child based on their IEP. On campus the preschool is a self-contained classroom of deaf and hard of hearing children who are exposed to a language rich signing environment. A pre-school student's IEP may be written to include opportunities in other locations to provide for inclusion in local educational activities with their hearing peers. Placement is based on such criteria as level of language skills, mode of communication preferred and previous educational experience. Family needs are also addressed, in some cases where the family has not had the opportunity for parent-infant education, through the continuation of parent involvement in services.
Upon completion of the preschool programs at SSSD in the past, children have continued their education in a wide variety of settings. "Graduates" of SSSD's preschool programs currently attend public and parochial schools, Intermediate Unit programs and/or the Scranton State School for the Deaf where they continue to receive an appropriate education based upon their individual needs.
