Schoolwide Event Calendar
At approximately eleven years of age the SSSD student reaches that age when life becomes a series of personal choices: interpersonal relationships take on new significance, maturation causes changes in a students relationship with school and people, and, educational style becomes more independently driven as opposed to teacher generated-student received as it was in the elementary years. These distinctions are accommodated in Junior High School School as a faculty team lays the groundwork for continued progress in various subject areas.
Junior High School students follow a departmentalized schedule receiving their academic coursework in small groups with the faculty team, and in other locations around the campus. Normal benchmarks continue to be the academic expectation in middle school, driving the individual student's IEP. Computer technology receives added emphasis and the availability of Distance Learning technology opens doors for field trips and educational contact with people and places from virtually anywhere in the world. The students also experience classroom work outside of the Junior High School in home arts, art, drama, industrial arts, library science and physical education with teachers specializing in those disciplines. Communication skills continue to be a focus developed through continued exposure to a language-rich signing environment and enhanced by continued individual communication skill development in auditory and verbal areas as specified in the student's IEP.
Science offers an investigation of science concepts, including space, time, energy matter and health. Social Studies concentrates on geography, civics, cultures, Pennsylvania history, and American history up to World War II. Arithmetic includes advanced addition, multiplication, subtraction, division, decimals, graphing, problem solving fractions, geometry. Academic enrichment in reading, language arts and mathematics is provided on an on going basis and combines with regular computer usage. Junior High school has its own computer lab, and classroom computers with linkage to the Internet/World Wide Web. Experience opportunities are always changing. Some past activities have included Junior High school students publishing a newspaper and developing pen pals via computer.
Additionally, field trips and special experiences help round out the Junior High School curricular offerings and provide a rich and challenging atmosphere for young learners, while fostering skills in independence and self-reliance. Students advancing from middle to high school at SSSD are honored at the Graduation exercises.
