Elementary school at SSSD offers children from ages five to ten an exciting language-rich signing environment in which to develop their academic skills in computers, math, science, social studies, reading, writing, English, penmanship, physical education, as well as home arts, vocations, and Deaf cultural issues. The natural environment of accessible communication at SSSD enhances a students' ability to receive information from their environment in the same way that of their hearing peers. Classroom placement is based on a combination of assessed needs, age, acquired skills and communication needs. The average student:teacher ratio is 5:1. Teacher assistants support the qualified teachers of the deaf in their classroom activities. Experiences with the older SSSD students provide a unique opportunity for young students to have Deaf role models on campus.
The elementary curriculum is geared to provide a strong base in development and cognitive tasks essential to the satisfactory growth of the child . Life experiences, field trips, special holiday events, easy access to computers, assemblies ,special guests and access to distance learning technology all contribute to the rich diversity of experiences available to young learners in this program. All SSSD Support Services and counseling services are available to the elementary school student as indicated by their IEP. Elementary students may attend on a daily commuter or residential basis.
For the past several years Graduation day at SSSD has included a brief ceremony of advancement for the elementary student who moves up to the Middle School at SSSD. In front of the entire assembly the students are accepted into a new phase of life at SSSD--Middle School.
From the U.S. Interstate 81, Exit 188: follow directional signs at the end of the exit ramp toward Dunmore following Blakely Street to traffic light at Drinker Street. Turn right onto Drinker Street that merges with Electric Street. Proceed to second traffic light. At this intersection, turn right onto North Washington Avenue, enter the main driveway on your right. Visitor parking is on your right.
